MEC operated four 2-6-6-2 Mallet locomotives #1201-1204 on the Mountain Division from 1911 through the 1920s. They were built for the B&M in 1910 to be used in the Hoosac Tunnel and were sold to the MEC when the Hoosac Tunnel was electrified the following year. Their length meant that the turntable at Bartlett had to be removed and a wye installed. They were used as both helpers and lead engines on the heavy tonnage freight trains to and from St Johnsbury, VT.
